Demanding applications for industry, commerce and public authorities often require special functions that can not be satisfactorily achieved with products "off the peg". For commonly used sensors such as, for example: FLIR Vue are now ready-to-install UAV kits available. The field of surveying and mapping is also gaining new opportunities for more efficient and more precise workflows thanks to the rapid development of ever-smaller and more powerful digital cameras and cost-effective RTK-GNSS systems. The variety of UAVs, the closeness of some manufacturers and firmware updates with some essential changes often complicate the implementation of the sensor in the operating system of the aircraft.

Infrared and thermal cameras

Infrared and thermal cameras are indispensable tools for a variety of commercial and regulatory inspection and monitoring tasks. Industrial service providers, police, fire brigade, homeland security, border patrol and the security industry are the main customers here.

OPTRIS thermal cameras are high-precision measuring instruments made in Germany. The purely radiometric design predestines them for demanding non-contact temperature measurement. The two-part system consisting of sensor and embedded computer is a market novelty and offers an IR video and image analysis of the recorded data. An additional RGB camera in GoPro format can also be connected. The data is saved during the flight on a USB stick. With only 380g weight without additional camera (GoPro 80gr), the OPTRIS PI640 can also be used on multicopters just under 5kg.



FLIR cameras are among the most commonly used infrared and thermal sensors and convince by their excellent image quality. For use on UAVs, the BOSON, VUE and TAU series are particularly suitable. There are countless lens and resolution variations available to suit any purpose. The robust build, low weight, and high integration capability of optional boards (AV output, PWM inputs, USB, serial port, etc.) make FLIR cameras the first choice for multi-rotor and aircraft applications. The standard output of IR cameras is black / white. The image is provided with a color map to make defined temperature ranges more visible.


Multispectral cameras

Multispectral cameras are used by environmental protection agencies and organizations, in science, and in agriculture and forestry. Depending on the method, cameras with one or more image sensors or special lenses with tempered filters are used. The vegetation index NDVI is probably the most commonly used method of global vegetation monitoring. The green parts of plants are pictorially represented by color tables. The results give u.a. Information about the "health status" of the cells of a plant and the density of the vegetation. This can be reliably located areas that are affected by dehydration or fire hazard.


Sentera products are the smallest multispectral cameras available on the market. The American manufacturer also offers complete systems with small DJI-Koptern for agriculture and forestry. Depending on the model, the sensors provide NDVI, NIR and NDRE, as well as a high-resolution RGB image. The Sentera Q is also a 18MP Sony camera with 10x zoom in a special gimbal available. The special camera enables geographic volumetrization, the analysis of surface data and the creation of 3D models.



Micasense Red Edge is currently the most versatile and compact multispectral camera on the market. With the 5 bands BLUE, GREEN, RED, RED-EDGE and NEAR IR and adjusted global shutter, a chlorophyll map, an NDVI layer, a digital surface model and an RGB image are created. The smaller sister model is optimized for monitoring plants and offers 4 narrow bands and an RGB camera. The model has GoPro format and can be integrated into any model aircraft.


RGB-HD Zoomcameras

Block cameras are available in resolutions from SD to 4k and a zoom range from 10x to 30x. SONY offers the largest selection of modules with different features. The smallest camera currently comes from TAMRON and convinces with an optical image stabilization, which makes this model for installation in smaller UAVs the first choice. For the implementation are optional various expansion cards u.a. also available with recording on SDCard for different connection types. Block cameras are components and not plug and play products. Housing, power supply units or connections for the usual RC-PWM inputs are not available.

Rangefinder / Altimeter

Rangefinders are high precision optical instruments used for distance measurement. Typical UAV applications include terrain follow missions and obstacle detection. The ranges of the shown laser altimeters are 50 and 250m and the accuracy is 1-10cm. The sensors are calibrated and ready to use. They provide stable readings regardless of daylight and are unaffected by speed, wind, changes in air pressure, noise, ambient light, and temperature changes in the air or soil.


LIDAR Scanner

LIDAR scanners are also rangefinders, but they can accurately image surfaces or environments. The device in the left image is a low cost 360 ° LIDAR with 40m range, 1000 measurements/s at 1-10Hz rotation and can be used for experimental UAV and UGV applications for object detection, distance measurement or detection of rooms. The Riegl miniVUX is a high-performance scanner developed for UAV use with a range of 100m and up to 100,000 readings at 150 scans/s. At home in demanding industrial applications, this state-of-the-art sensor is used to inspect railways and overhead lines, pipelines and power lines, roads, bridges and structures, and corridor mapping.


Gas sensors

The reliable detection of leaking gases in pipelines, industrial plants, landfills and biogas plants places considerable demands on the equipment used. TEPCO's hand-held device has been designed specifically for the detection of methane gas for in-house use and has a range of 30m. Some manufacturers offer UAV complete solutions for pipeline monitoring, but no usable results are available. An autonomous measurement with a one-point measuring system requires GNSS positioning in the sub-decimeter range. The pipeline to be monitored would also have to be precisely measured or a tracking system installed. In manual surveys of biogas plants and pipelines, a partner company has achieved reliable results and has established this as a service.


RGB cameras

For "classic" film and photo shoots, the DSLR and compact camera market offers models for every "taste" in all price segments. If only a few buttons are required, such as Release or Auto Focus, adaptation is usually possible via optional accessories. Demanding cinematic systems are pre-configured by specialized providers in the film and television industry. For photogrammetric applications selected models of well-known manufacturers such as Canon or Sony are already equipped in the consumer class with 20MP resolution and are very well suited for simple applications. For higher accuracies, a Sony 36MP with Global Shutter and as a Hi-End solution a Phase1 IXU with 40, 50 or 100MP offers. The geo-referencing of the shutter, if no corresponding output is available, realized via the flash connection. For Canon cameras without HotShoe, a customized operating system is temporarily installed via the storage medium. This makes it possible to save the moment of optoelectronically triggering via the RedEye LED.

First-person-view cameras

The AERO OTS is a programmable Trigger / TimeMark unit and data memory for georeferenced aerial photography with up to 9 FLIR A65 thermal camera. The special feature of the i7 core-based system is its ease of use in use. After a single configuration only a network cable from the flight control (here Aerotopol) must be plugged. During booting, the connected cameras are automatically detected and initialized. After that, the AERO OTS is ready for operation.
A ROS framework is installed on a UNIX-based operating system providing access to all data streams and system parameters even during operation. In addition, a websocket interface is available as a development platform to enable extensions and integration with other systems.

AERO RECON DEC is the "tactical" variant of the versatile fixed-wing aircraft. Equipped with only 2 light cameras in the nose and a powerful video transmission, it is ideal for long reconnaissance flights or rescue operations in large, confusing areas. Forest fires, floods, anti-pouching and terrain protection are typical areas of application. The IR camera allows a person detection up to 1000m and allows manual landings at night.
Optionally, the system can also send image data and streams to various end devices using an encrypted LTE connection.
